About Marilyn Kirkpatrick

Meet Marilyn

Marilyn Kirkpatrick is a lifelong Southern Nevadan who grew up in the heart of the valley. Her life experiences are what motivated her to better her community and continuously give back. She is a proud product of our educational system, having graduated from Western High School, and attended the Krolack Business School and the Community College of Southern Nevada.

Marilyn and her husband Mike have a blended family of six children and six grandchildren.

Community Service Journey

2001 - Planning Commissioner

After starting a family, she decided to get more involved in her community by volunteering with Girl Scouts, the PTA, and much more. The City of North Las Vegas recognized her involvement and appointed her as a planning commissioner in 2001. She worked hard and applied her knowledge to help make North Las Vegas the vibrant city that it is.

2004 - State Assembly - District 1

In 2004 she decided to take her community activism further and run for the state Assembly. She won a seat in Assembly District 1 and represented her community for a decade.

2013 - Speaker of the Assembly

In 2013 she served as the Speaker of the Assembly and along the way earned a reputation as a policy expert, particularly on taxes, asking questions and researching minute details. She was a key negotiator on tax issues, strongly believing that the goal was to improve tax policy for Nevada for the long term. Marilyn earned high marks as a fair and honest leader whom worked on both sides of the aisle to bring about consensus legislation.

2015 - County Commission

In 2015, Governor Brian Sandoval appointed her to the County Commission to fill the District B vacancy when Tom Collins retired and in 2016 she was successfully elected to the seat for a full term.

On the County Commission she has worked to drive down crime statistics and authored the “Pathway from Poverty” program to assist children and families struggling to make ends meet, making sure every possible opportunity is afforded them. Aside from working on policies, she is a boots-on-the-ground elected official who spends time out of the office and in the field with constituents. She often hosts community cleanups and helps create vegetable gardens at the schools in her area.

2019 - County Commission Chair

In 2019, her colleagues voted to appoint her as the Chair of the Clark County Commission.
